Mammalian Cell & Tissue Culture

Engineer Biology ! Students obtain (A) hands-on skills of mammalian cell isolation, and cell and tissue culture, and (B) background knowledge of how such methods are used to investigate diseases and develop new therapies.

Students learn (1) the basis for cell and tissue growth, (2) how to mathematically describe cell growth, (3) how to grow and analyze cells, and (4) how to develop new therapies with such cultures.

Students will learn from professionals in academia and industry about how these techniques are used to discover and produce new biological therapies for human disease.

In their home “lab”, students learn to (1) plan, prepare, and deliver solutions to propagate mammalian cells, (2) visualize and obtain digital light microscope images of cells, tissues, and cultures, (3) create disease models, and (4) analyze images and biochemical assays to assess cell and tissue growth in response to different stimuli.

Students will use standard equipment including micropipettes, serological pipets, culture plates, and digital light microscopes for cell and tissue cultures.

Students will prepare and test culture media for mammalian cell growth responses, in collaboration with a research lab.

After MCTC, students will have core skills and knowledge of mammalian cell and tissue culture.

These approaches are used in academia and industry to investigate the cause and potential treatments for diseases including cancer, neurodegeneration, myocardial infarction, diabetes, osteoporosis, and arthritis.
