Psychosis: Development, Symptoms, and Treatment

Psychosis is among the most mysterious states of the human mind.

It is a symptom of several psychiatric disorders, most notably schizophrenia.

It can also be experienced temporarily under the influence of psychoactive drugs, sleep loss, or extreme stress.

In this course, we discuss the symptoms and phenomenology of psychosis and how it manifests in schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

Students also learn about the various pathways of its development, with a focus on genetic and environmental influences, as well as possible treatment interventions.

Students are challenged to confront their preexisting notions about psychosis and to develop understanding and empathy for those experiencing it.
