Science Writing & Communication II

10 Weeks | Online Course Overview : This advanced writing course is designed to build upon the foundational skills acquired in Science Writing I.

I n this course, students will embark on a science communication project of their choice—such as a long-form article or article series, podcast script or explainer video script—allowing them to explore topics they are passionate about while honing their craft.

Throughout the course, students will learn advanced techniques to effectively communicate scientific and technical subjects to a broader audience.

The curriculum emphasizes extensive writing practice, peer critique, and in-depth reading and discussion.

These activities will push students beyond basic storytelling and news reporting, encouraging them to consider the broader role of science in society.

By the end of the course, students will have developed a nuanced understanding of how to convey complex scientific ideas in an engaging and accessible manner, preparing them to contribute meaningfully to public discourse on scientific and technical issues.

Learning Objectives: Analyze complex scientific concepts and communicate them clearly to a non-specialist audience Evaluate peer science writing using knowledge of course concepts and compose feedback that identifies strengths and areas for improvement Develop the ability to identify a target audience and tailor methods and messages for engaging with that audience Apply ethical principles to writing decisions, such as source attribution, representation of data, and fact-checking Demonstrate time management by meeting drafting and revision deadlines throughout the writing process Engage in iterative writing and revision processes, incorporating feedback to demonstrate increasing independence and proficiency in science writing Prerequisite: Successful completion of Science Writing I, WCWP 40105.
