Policy Writing and Analysis Precapstone

This course offers a comprehensive introduction to public policy as both an academic field and professional practice.

Students examine the policy-making process, core methods of policy analysis, and the political, economic, and social forces that shape how policy is designed and implemented.

Through a blend of theoretical frameworks and real-world case studies, the course prepares students for advanced study and applied work in policy environments at the local, state, federal, and international levels.

Class sessions emphasize diagnosing policy problems, communicating findings clearly, and developing actionable policy prescriptions.

Readings span historical and contemporary examples across domestic and international policy domains, illustrating how policy dynamics play out in practice.

Coursework focuses on building tangible, transferable skills in evaluating, designing, and writing policy papers.

Students learn to identify pressing policy challenges, apply methodological tools to analyze them, and present evidence-based solutions.

Throughout the course, students engage in structured writing and research assignments—including memos, briefings, analytical papers, and presentations—culminating in the production of a high-quality policy paper on a topic of personal or professional interest.

By the end of the semester, students are equipped with the tools, perspectives, and communication skills used by policy professionals.
