Teaching Impacts of Technology
Overview: In this self-paced, start anytime, online course prepare to teach the impacts of computing.
This course counts toward the Supplementary Authorization in Computer Science.
Help students learn about the impacts of computing.
This course covers both the technical knowledge and pedagogical approaches for teaching about the impacts of computing on society.
This course uses common experiences with computation and technology to motivate exploration and analysis of the impacts of computing.
We’ll drill down into these technologies to learn about issues of computing systems, networks & the internet, and data & analysis impact technology development and our society, economy, and culture.
NOTE: Students enrolled in the course will receive a welcome email from the instructor and instructions on how to access the course on Coursera the following Monday after enrollment.
What you'll learn Use a problem-based approach to explore computing in society Specifically we will explore the following: How is Generative AI changing education? The workplace? What is algorithmic bias and how is it impacting us? How are we digitally surveilled ? Who is more likely to be surveilled and what can you do about it? How does social media suck us in? How can you spot misinformation/disinformation ? How can technology save the planet and how is it contributing to climate change ? What do you (and everyone) need to know about cybersecurity ? How are robotics and augmented reality changing our world? Create your own practical teaching resources In addition to gaining access to materials that you can use immediately in your classroom, you will build resources to support your teaching (lesson plans, activities) and explore learning theories and Universal Design for Learning in the context of computer science.
