CELT E-113

Irish Storytelling

This course explores the world of traditional Irish storytelling in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, focusing on context, storytellers, community, collectors, collections, and of course, the stories themselves.

Storytellers' biographies, ethnography, proverbs, and live performance give breadth and contour to our understanding of the stories and the world in which they were and are told.

Questions of genre, evaluation, gender, nationalism, and identity are also considered.
